Marble Etching vs. Staining: What's Really Happening to Your Stone

Etching is a chemical burn: acid dissolving the calcium carbonate at the surface, leaving a permanent dull or rough mark. Staining is a physical absorption issue: a liquid soaking into the stone's pores and discoloring it, which is sometimes reversible. Etching happens because marble, limestone, travertine, onyx, and quartzite all contain calcium carbonate, a mineral that reacts with acid. Lemon juice, wine, vinegar, and coffee are all acidic enough to trigger the reaction the moment they touch the stone. The acid dissolves a microscopic layer of the surface, and what's left behind is a permanent change in texture: a spot that looks dull or feels slightly rough, even after the stone is completely clean and dry.

Staining happens for an entirely different reason. Marble is porous, and oils, pigments, and other liquids can soak down into those pores and sit there, darkening the stone from within.
