A pre-use checklist

Identify the treatment. Record the manufacturer's full product name and, if provided, the product or batch identifier. Ask the installer which materials were used on the surface and request the current manufacturer instructions.

Confirm what the food-contact evidence covers. Ask whether the supplied documentation addresses the exact product and the finished, cured surface, and whether it applies to the type of food contact you intend. A general safety sheet or an unqualified marketing statement may not answer that question.

Follow application and curing instructions. Request the required cure time and any conditions or restrictions before food contact. If instructions are incomplete or the conditions during installation differed from those specified, ask the manufacturer or installer to clarify before using the surface for food preparation.

Review cleaning and maintenance guidance. Confirm which cleaners and cleaning methods are permitted, and whether the product has maintenance or inspection requirements. Do not infer these from the stone type or from a separate stain-resistance claim.

Keep the records. Save the product documentation, written installer instructions, and any warranty terms with the project records. If the supplier cannot provide clear, product-specific information, avoid making a food-contact claim and ask for an answer in writing before relying on the treatment.

Keep the questions separate

Food-contact suitability, ease of cleaning, stain resistance, acid resistance, and antimicrobial performance are not interchangeable claims. Documentation supporting one property does not automatically establish the others. Ask for evidence and instructions that match the particular product and intended use, then follow those instructions for the treated surface.

This checklist is general information, not a product approval or a substitute for the manufacturer's current directions. The installer or supplier should be able to identify the treatment and point you to the documentation needed to assess your use.
