About RAKU Coating
What is RAKU nanocoating?
RAKU is an Italian-engineered nanocoating developed by Lantania for use on selected stone surfaces. It is intended to bond at the surface and help reduce staining, etching, and moisture penetration. Results and appearance vary with the stone, preparation, application, use, and care.
Does RAKU nanocoating change how the stone looks?
RAKU is designed to preserve the stone's natural appearance, but visual results vary by finish, preparation, and application. Ask for a sample or test area when appearance is important.
How is RAKU different from a regular marble sealer?
Traditional sealers and nanocoatings have different formulations and care requirements. RAKU is intended to bond at the surface and help reduce acid-etching and staining risk; performance depends on the stone, application, use, and care.
How is RAKU different from TuffSkin or surface films?
TuffSkin and similar products are physical films that may show edges or change with use. RAKU is a coating rather than a film, but finish, feel, adhesion, and appearance depend on the stone and application; review a sample and written care guidance.
Can RAKU be used for direct food contact?
Do not assume direct food-contact approval. Request the applicable written certification and use guidance for the specific product and project before specifying a treated surface for food preparation or direct food contact. Allow approximately six days for full cure.
What is the heat resistance of RAKU?
Heat tolerance depends on the stone, installation, and use. Ask the applicator about induction cooktops, buffet heat lamps, outdoor grills, and other heat sources; no universal temperature rating is represented here.
Where is RAKU coating made?
RAKU is manufactured in Italy by Lantania, a specialist in nano-technology surface protection for natural stone. It is used by luxury hospitality groups and interior designers across Europe and is now available in North America through Marble Armour, the official US Representative of RAKU.
Is Marble Armour the same company as Marble Armor?
No. Marble Armour, spelled with the British and Canadian "our," installs RAKU nanocoating. We do not describe it as permanent or publish blanket warranty terms; coverage follows the written project terms. Marble Armor, spelled with the American "or," is a separate company.
The Service
How long does RAKU coating installation take?
Application is commonly scheduled as a one-day service for suitable surfaces. Light use may be possible after approximately 24 hours if the applicator confirms it, but allow about six days for full cure and follow the project care guidance.
Do I need to leave my home or close my business during application?
Not necessarily. The RAKU application process produces minimal disruption. For residential applications, you can typically remain in your home. For commercial settings, we work around your operating hours to minimise downtime.
How long does RAKU coating last?
Care guidance describes an approximate expected service life of about 10 years residentially and 3–5 years commercially. These are not warranty terms; longevity and any reapplication depend on traffic, wear, care, and the written project terms.
What surfaces can RAKU coating be applied to?
RAKU may be suitable for selected calcium-based stones, including marble, onyx, quartzite, travertine, and limestone, but suitability must be confirmed for the specific stone, finish, location, and use. An applicator should assess the surface first.
Can RAKU be applied to already-stained or etched marble?
RAKU coating should be applied to clean, sound stone. If your marble has existing stains or etch marks, we recommend professional restoration or polishing prior to application. In some cases, minor staining can be addressed as part of the preparation process - our certified applicators will assess the surface before beginning.
Do you offer service in my city?

After Application
How do I clean marble after RAKU coating is applied?
Follow the project care guidance. Mild soap and water or a pH-neutral cleaner may be appropriate; avoid bleach-based products and abrasive scrubs unless specifically approved. Routine cleaning and prompt spill removal remain part of care.
Will wine, lemon juice, or coffee still stain my marble?
Wine, lemon juice, coffee, and other acids can still damage stone if left in contact with it. RAKU is intended to help reduce etching and staining risk and provide time for cleanup; wipe spills promptly and follow care guidance. Results are not guaranteed.
Does the coating need to be maintained or reapplied?
Care remains necessary, including routine cleaning and prompt spill removal. Reapplication is not scheduled automatically; it may depend on wear, use, inspection, and the written project terms. Contact the team if the surface changes.

Is RAKU coating suitable for restaurant and bar marble surfaces?
It may be suitable for restaurant and hospitality surfaces after a project-specific assessment. Bar tops, dining counters, and host stands face acidic beverages, food, and cleaning products; RAKU is intended to help reduce related etching and staining risk, not eliminate it.
Can RAKU be applied to hotel lobbies and large commercial floors?
Yes. RAKU is used in luxury hotel lobbies, commercial reception areas, and large-format stone floors across Europe. Marble Armour brings this capability to North America. Our certified applicators are trained for both residential and large commercial projects.
Do you work with interior designers and specifiers?
Yes. We work directly with interior designers, architects, and property developers who specify stone surfaces in their projects. We can provide technical documentation, samples, and project-based quoting for design professionals. Contact us to discuss your project.
