What Actually Damages a Quartz Countertop
Quartz's resin binder is the source of both its strength and its vulnerability. The stone particles themselves are extremely hard, but the resin matrix holding them together can be affected by heat: a hot pan set directly on the surface can discolor the resin or, in worse cases, cause cracking. Harsh chemicals are the other risk. Undiluted bleach, oven cleaners, paint strippers, and other strong solvents can dull the surface or strip its factory finish. Certain acidic cleaners, left to sit, can cause light etching over time even on quartz. None of this happens as easily as it does on marble, but it happens, and once resin is damaged, it can't be buffed out the way stone can.
