What Marble Protection Actually Needs to Stop

Marble is calcium carbonate, which means it reacts to acid. A splash of lemon juice, wine, vinegar, or tomato sauce can etch a dull, permanent mark into the surface within seconds. This is chemical damage, not dirt, and it cannot be polished away with cleaning. Marble is also porous, so oil, coffee, and colored liquids soak into the stone and stain from underneath rather than sitting on top where they can be wiped off. On top of that, marble scratches more easily than harder stones like granite or quartzite, and it's frequently used near heat sources such as stovetops, fireplace surrounds, and hot pans, where thermal stress can compound the problem. Real marble protection has to address all four at once: etching, staining, scratching, and heat. A cutting board and a coaster habit help, but they don't solve the underlying vulnerability of the stone.
